A really strange story with a really happy ending is what we all need. A homeless Brazilian man has become an internet sensation after running an 8km race in flip-flops while hungover. Isaque dos Santos Pinho showed up unregistered at a race in Garrafão do Norte on July 27th, thinking running would cure his hangover. Despite being visibly drunk and wearing flip-flops instead of proper running shoes, he completed the race and received a medal. A drone captured his effort, and the video went viral on social media.
The 31-year-old’s life story of alcoholism and homelessness touched people across Brazil. After the video gained attention, he started receiving donations of running shoes, clothing, and training invitations. The local municipality offered him future race opportunities, and activists helped get him off the streets with plans to build him a house. Isaque has since quit drinking and says the race changed his life, inspiring him to train regularly and work toward a better future.
