A TikTok theory from 2023 has reignited, sparking panic, with gym-goers convinced they can catch chlamydia from gym equipment. The hysteria began after a fitness influencer named Jayden shared a story about being diagnosed with chlamydial conjunctivitis, which he claimed came from using a gym towel contaminated by sweat. While his story went viral, experts, including Dr. Suzanne Wylie, have debunked the idea. “The likelihood of contracting chlamydia from gym equipment is effectively zero,” Dr. Wylie explained, noting the bacteria responsible for chlamydia doesn’t survive well outside the body.
Other Doctors have posted on TikTok to weighed in, emphasizing that STIs primarily spread through sexual contact, not casual surface exposure. However, they warn gym-goers about other infections like MRSA, ringworm, and warts, which can be transmitted through shared equipment. Dr. Wylie advised, “Keep wiping down and sanitizing your gym equipment—it’s not preventing chlamydia, but it is protecting you from other potential infections.” So, while gym-goers can put their STI fears to rest, maintaining hygiene remains crucial for avoiding other common germs.
@drjoe_md Dirty gym equipment can harbor harmful bacteria, viruses, and fungi that can cause a range of infections. Common illnesses include skin infections like staph or MRSA, fungal infections like athlete’s foot or ringworm, and viral infections such as warts caused by HPV. If gym-goers touch contaminated surfaces and then their face, they may even risk illnesses like the common cold or flu. Cleaning equipment before use and washing hands after workouts can help reduce these risks. #stayhealthy #FitnessTips #WorkoutTips #HealthAwareness #FitnessHacks ♬ original sound – Dr. Joe, M.D. 🩺
