Cheers to Anita LeBrun…literally. The Minnesota widow, who lives at the Amira Choice Champlin assisted living facility, has helped change state law so care homes can host happy hours. LeBrun learned her facility could not legally serve alcohol at resident gatherings because no existing liquor license fit its situation, so she testified before both the Minnesota House and Senate. She told lawmakers that just because residents are older and live in assisted living does not mean they should have fewer freedoms than anyone else, adding that she and her friends love happy hour just like many of them do.
Governor Tim Walz signed the measure, nicknamed the Grandparents’ Happy Hour bill, and later joined her for a ceremonial signing at her facility. Nursing homes, assisted living communities, and boarding care homes can now serve alcohol to residents and guests at organized events without a liquor license, as long as they notify the state and follow safety rules. The alcohol provisions take effect August 1st. Some lawmakers raised concerns about expanding alcohol access. LeBrun says the change is about connection, laughter, and sharing stories.
