Goldfish Survives For Two Weeks With No Head

A video of a goldfish swimming around with most of its head missing has gone viral in China. The fish’s owner said the tissue on its head became infected and started to die. Other fish in the tank then pecked at it, making it worse until the fish lost its eyes, mouth, and part of its brain. So how did it stay alive?

Unlike humans, fish have brains that stretch into their bodies. The back part of the brain, which controls breathing and blood flow, was still working. Fish also have sensors along their sides that act like sonar, helping them avoid walls even without eyes. The owner said the fish lived about two weeks before dying from organ failure caused by freshwater flooding into its body through the wound.
