An Iowa high school teacher was fired after offering students extra credit for donating to her personal GoFundMe account. Stephanie Mullaley, who taught in the Clinton Community School District, told students the fundraiser would help pay for her education goals, including travel, food, and hotel stays. Some students donated, and an administrative judge found that the promise of higher grades made them feel pressured to give money.
The account had a goal of $1,800 but collected only $140 from six donations before activity was paused. Mullaley was fired May 29th for allegedly breaking the district’s ethics rules, and the judge later denied her request for unemployment benefits, finding that her actions counted as misconduct at work.
