In Cape Coral, Florida, a Muscovy duck has been causing trouble in a neighborhood near Surfside Boulevard. The duck has attacked several residents, biting and chasing them, and even sent one person to the hospital. James Sepulveda, who’s lived there since 1998, was bitten on the hand while relaxing on his porch, leaving it bleeding. Another neighbor, Richard Guy, said the duck flapped its wings and tried to attack him when he shooed it away.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission says Muscovy ducks are protected, but they can be removed humanely since they’re not native to Florida, only Texas. Options include killing them humanely or donating them for science or education. For Sepulveda, hiring a trapper is too expensive on his fixed income, and he wants the duck gone because it’s hurting people. The neighborhood is staying cautious around this aggressive bird.
