A Chinese family has set off a heated online debate after commissioning an AI-generated digital clone of their deceased family member to continue video chatting with his 80-year-old mother, who was never told he died. The man was killed in a car accident, and his family, knowing his mother also suffers from heart disease, decided to keep the truth from her to spare her the pain of losing a son.
The AI clone was built using photos, videos, and audio recordings and reportedly reproduced his voice, accent, distinctive speech patterns, and physical mannerisms with unsettling accuracy, including the way he leaned forward when speaking. The elderly woman continues to call regularly, urging her “son” to eat well and take care of himself, while the AI promises to visit when work slows down. The case was made public by the developer who built the clone.
