A mysterious Formula 2 racecar driver who had been spotted on Czech motorways for six years was finally caught by police near Prague. Since 2019, authorities received reports of a red Formula 1-style car speeding on highways, but the driver always wore a visor helmet that made identification impossible, and the case was repeatedly dropped due to lack of evidence. The phantom driver became a legend in the Czech Republic as police struggled to catch him. That came to an end on Sunday when officers spotted the red racecar at a gas station near Dobris and followed it to a property in the village of Buk.
Video shows the 51-year-old driver being towed by another vehicle with police in pursuit. When confronted at his property, the man told police they were trespassing and argued with them before agreeing to go to the station for questioning. The suspect, dressed in a red racing suit and helmet, refused to answer most questions and denied ever driving the Dallara GP2/08 Formula 2 car on motorways. Since all evidence shows the driver with a helmet, police still can’t prove it was the same person. If convicted, he faces fines of $240-$480 and a driving ban of six months to a year for operating an illegal racing car on public roads.
