A tech startup called Just Like Me is charging people $1.99 per minute, or $49.99 for 45 minutes, to have a video conversation with an AI-powered avatar of Jesus Christ. The company says its Jesus AI model was trained on the King James Bible and sermons from various preachers, and the avatar is based on actor Jonathan Roumie‘s portrayal of Jesus on the TV show “The Chosen.”
CEO Chris Breed said the tool is not meant to replace faith or clergy but to offer users “a compassionate presence” to help navigate everyday challenges. The company acknowledges on its website that the chatbot is not actually Jesus Christ and has no divine authority. Response on social media has been largely negative, with many calling it exploitative toward religious people; one commenter pointed out that prayer is free.
