A Chinese drone company has set a new Guinness World Record for the most drones operated simultaneously, flying 22,580 drones at the same time over the city of Hefei in Anhui province this past February. The record-breaking light show was staged by Guangdong-based company EHang Egret, which used AI-powered “swarm intelligence” technology to control the entire fleet as a single unit, reportedly without a single collision despite the scale of the display.
The drones formed three-dimensional Chinese lanterns, skylines, and other elaborate shapes in a show designed to showcase China’s drone technology leadership. The feat shatters a string of records that have fallen in quick succession, including one set in mid-2025 with 11,787 drones and another late last year with 15,847. Military analysts note that drone swarm technology of this kind has potential dual-use applications, as large numbers of AI-controlled drones could theoretically be used to overwhelm advanced air defense systems.
