A bridge in Greece collapsed nearly three years ago, but drivers still cross it every day. The Palaiopyrgos bridge, in the country’s Thessaly region, buckled at its center during Storm Daniel in September 2023, a disaster that killed thousands across Greece, Bulgaria, and Turkey and knocked out 79 bridges in the region alone. The span now sags badly, with its middle section hanging just inches above the Pineios River. Officially, it has been closed ever since.
But no one ever barricaded it or repaired it, so anyone willing to ignore the warning signs can simply drive across. Drone footage from a local newspaper shows a pickup truck creeping over the wreckage like an obstacle course before reaching the other side. Locals say many drivers take the risk because the alternative route means a long detour that eats up time and fuel. Tourists are sometimes steered toward it too, which obviously comes as a surprise to out-of-towners.
