Vermont Pub & Brewery will serve its last customers on November 14th, just days after its 38th anniversary. The Burlington business said sales haven’t returned to the level it needs to stay open since 2020, and its owners can’t afford to keep waiting. Greg and Nancy Noonan opened the pub in 1988 after Greg helped write changes to state law allowing businesses to brew and serve beer under one roof.
It became Vermont’s first brewpub and helped train brewers who later started other well-known beer businesses. Greg died in 2009, and longtime staff members Elise Pecor and Scott Gawitt now own the pub. Along with slow sales, Pecor has raised concerns about staff safety and problems on the patio, including someone defecating on it three days in a row. Customers can expect food and beer specials during the pub’s final days.
