A small outdoor aquarium in Brooklyn has reopened after being shut down last month for poor treatment of its fish. Inspectors found overcrowded tanks, dirty water, and fish with infections and injuries at the Bed-Stuy location. The state ordered the aquarium to close and fix the problems, which included reducing the number of fish, improving water quality, and bringing in a vet.
Now that it’s open again right next to its original site in a water hydrant puddle, animal-rights groups aren’t happy about it. The current record-breaking heat wave hitting New York could cause problems for the fish in the outdoor aquarium, with one animal rights group saying, “It will be a painful death.” What does the person who started the sidewalk aquarium think? That’s unknown, since they were sentenced to 12 years in prison on attempted murder charges in January.
