Kim Hall, a 57-year-old woman from Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia, began speaking with a “posh” British accent following jaw surgery. Diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma in her lower jaw, Hall underwent extensive treatment, and about a week after her surgery, her family noticed her Australian accent had changed to what sounded like a northern English accent.
Doctors believe Hall developed Foreign Accent Syndrome, a rare neurological condition that alters speech patterns, typically after a stroke or brain injury. Hall’s case is unusual because it occurred post-surgery without any known brain injury. Hall is now actively involved in raising awareness for head and neck cancer research in a very posh way.
