Remember, don’t kink-shame your laptop. An Amsterdam-based developer has turned a silly social media gag into a surprisingly successful product. Tonino Catapano built SlapMac, a macOS app that uses a MacBook’s built-in motion sensors to detect when the laptop is smacked and responds with a sound effect, after a short Instagram clip of the concept went viral. Users can choose from around 160 sounds across nine packs, ranging from dramatic moans and punches to other deliberately absurd options.
A recent update added a “USB Moaner” mode that triggers sounds when something is plugged in or unplugged, which fits the theme a little too well. The app was built in 48 hours from scratch, initially priced at $5, and pulled in more than $5,000 in its first three days, with over 7,000 installations. The app requires an Apple Silicon MacBook running macOS 14.6 or later. Catapano has said more features, including custom sound uploads, are in the works. You can see a video update on the app to the right.
