A Swedish Company Is Demoing Its Flying Electric Boats In Washington D.C.

A Swedish company called Candela is bringing its flying electric boats to Washington D.C. this week to show how they could cut commute times in half. The boats use underwater wings and a special controller to lift out of the water and fly above the surface, reducing drag by 80 percent. The demonstration will use the C-8 model near the Swedish embassy, but it shows how the larger P-12 shuttle could change city travel.

A trip from Georgetown to Reagan Airport that takes 20 minutes by car or 37 minutes on public transit would only take six minutes on the P-12. The boats are quiet, run on electric power, and create no wake, so they can travel at high speeds even in restricted zones. Candela’s P-12 is already being used in Stockholm’s public transport system, where it’s cut some travel times in half. The Washington D.C. demos start tomorrow.
