WHO Says Monkeypox Is Getting A New Name

The World Health Organization says it’s working with experts on the monkeypox outbreak – specifically, they’re coming up with a new name for the virus that’s “non-discriminatory and non-stigmatizing.” The announcement comes after a group of scientists wrote WHO and told them about the “urgent need” for a new name.

One new name that’s been suggested by scientists is hMPXV, but there’s no sign that the organization will choose that name or go with something else. The scientists say that continued reference to the virus as African is both inaccurate and discriminatory.
