Whisky could soon be taking a five-year trip around Earth as scientists test whether space can speed up its aging. Engineers in Scotland and Japan plan to launch a tiny satellite called “Space Puffin” in 2028, carrying whisky samples, wood chips and ingredients used to make the spirit. The satellite will orbit Earth every 90 minutes, exposing the experiment to changing temperatures that researchers hope could affect how the whisky develops.
Sensors will send back information about its color and chemical makeup. The project could also help scientists learn how to make ingredients for medicines in space. This satellite will not return to Earth, so there will be no tasting session, but the team hopes a future mission could bring space-aged Scotch home.
