Officials in St. Lucie County, Florida, are trying to figure out who installed a group of unauthorized Flock license-plate cameras. County workers knew about 52 approved cameras but discovered 14 more that had not been cleared by the county. The sheriff’s office later claimed three of them, leaving 11 with no publicly identified owner. Officials also do not know whether the cameras are still active or who may have access to any information they collected.
Flock cameras photograph passing vehicles and record license plates, times, and locations. County workers plan to cover the mystery cameras with plastic bags and have posted notices giving whoever installed them 30 days to remove them. The discovery comes after a former local police officer was accused of improperly using Flock data to track his ex-girlfriend’s vehicle.
