A Turkish man who escaped from prison eight years ago managed to avoid capture by changing his appearance and living as a woman under his sister’s identity. Tuğrul Başar fled in 2018 to avoid serving a three-year sentence for three robberies in which he had posed as a public official. Police eventually tracked him to a home in Istanbul, where investigators discovered that two people who appeared to be women were using the same identity.
Başar had changed his appearance so much that officers could no longer identify him from his old photographs. When police arrested him, he was carrying his sister’s identification card, but fingerprint tests confirmed who he was. Some reports claim he underwent a gender transition, although that has not been confirmed. Authorities say he will serve his original sentence in a men’s prison.
