Dallas garbage trucks are now equipped with AI-powered cameras that scan homes and flag possible code violations as they travel their regular routes. The system, operated by City Detect, gives properties a “blight score” and can identify issues such as tall grass, sidewalk problems, debris, and chimney damage. One homeowner received a warning over discoloration on his chimney, and it’s not just in Dallas; the cameras are also being used in other states.
NBC 5 found that the technology has already flagged possible violations at more than 21-thousand properties, and City Detect says faces and license plates are blurred, its system is not connected to law enforcement or federal databases, and city employees must review each finding before action is taken. A Dallas council member has raised questions about funding for the program, and city officials plan to hold a hearing on the system.
