A suspected rhino poacher was killed after being trampled by elephants in South Africa’s Kruger National Park. Two men reportedly entered the park illegally carrying high-powered rifles and an axe, then moved toward a group of white rhinos near a water source. As one man prepared to shoot, a nearby herd of elephants charged them; the men ran in different directions, but one was caught and trampled so badly that rangers later found little more than blood and clothing.
The second man escaped the immediate attack but was later arrested. Rangers followed tracks almost four miles into the park and also found a dead buffalo they believe the men had killed. Rhino poaching remains a serious problem in Kruger, where the animals are targeted for their valuable horns.
