Videos of the practice began appearing on TikTok and other social media sites last year and have since gained attention around the world. The trend is sometimes linked to “looksmaxxing,” which focuses on changing a person’s appearance to fit certain beauty ideals.
Doctors warn that eyelashes are not just for looks, since they help keep dirt, sweat, dead skin, and even some UV rays away from the eyes. Cutting them very short can lead to irritation, infections, and discomfort, while using sharp tools close to the eye can cause serious injury. Eyelashes eventually grow back, but the process can take several months.
