A new weekly ritual in Chicago is helping people let go of stress, one scream at a time. Every Sunday at 7 p.m., people gather at the North Avenue Beach Pier to scream out over Lake Michigan. The group is called Scream Club, and it was started this summer by Manny Hernandez, a breathwork coach, along with Elena Soboleva. It began as something the two friends did on their own, but soon strangers wanted to join in.
Before the screaming starts, people write down what is bothering them on a small piece of paper and toss it into the lake. Then the group breathes together before letting out a loud scream. What started as a small group has grown into a crowd of more than 100 people in some weeks. The event is free, and no sign-up is needed, and other cities now want their own version.
