A superstitious man in China ended up with a detached retina after slapping his own twitching eye to chase away bad luck. In Chinese folklore, a twitching left eye is said to bring wealth, while a twitching right eye means disaster. So when Mr. Le, from Wuhan, had his right eye twitch for several days, he grew more and more anxious. Warm compresses did not help, so he turned to the internet, where he found a suggestion to simply slap the eye that turned his bad luck into a self-fulfilling prophecy.
He hit his right eye and the area around it over and over for three days. The twitching finally stopped, but then his vision suddenly narrowed until he could only see straight ahead, with his side vision gone. Once he told doctors about his slapping routine, they diagnosed a detached retina and rushed him into emergency surgery. Thankfully, he recovered his sight and is expected to be just fine.
