With fuel prices climbing in Russia, some desperate drivers are reaching for a strange fix: little pills that supposedly help cars use less gas. The shortage comes as Ukrainian drone strikes hit Russian oil refineries, leaving some areas rationing fuel and others raising prices to cool demand. Enter the so-called fuel tabs; according to a popular Telegram news channel, sales of these tablets have jumped 2.5 times in the past month.
Sold under names like Buqa or B-ECO, they claim to make engines burn fuel more efficiently, and one tablet supposedly treats up to 200 liters of gasoline. Some brands even boast that they can turn cheaper, lower-grade gas into a higher grade. You can grab them at most gas stations for less than a couple of dollars. How they work is anybody’s guess, but experts warn the extra additives could clash with chemicals already in the fuel, possibly gumming up injectors or harming the engine.
