Six People Were Sealed Inside A Capsule On Thursday To Practice For A Trip To Mars

Well, this half-dozen people have no plans for the year. Six volunteers have sealed themselves inside a simulated space station in Cologne, Germany, as part of a European Space Agency experiment called Solis100. The group, three men and three women between the ages of 26 and 32 from six European countries, will not leave until August. Their conditions are meant to mimic a long-duration space mission: no alcohol, no daylight, no fresh food, and no romantic relationships.

They get one two-hour video call with family per week, must be in bed by 11 p.m., and can only shower for five minutes, twice a week. Blood tests are taken through a slot in the door, and participants are told not to make eye contact with medical staff. Every moment except time in their sleep pods and bathrooms is monitored by cameras. ESA wants to understand how isolation and tight-knit group living affect mental health and thinking ability, ahead of any future human mission to Mars.
