Yellowstone Wolf Steals Sign Warning Tourists About Grizzly Bears

If it had been a coyote, you’d have to wonder if the sign was made by ACME. A young wolf from Yellowstone National Park’s Junction Butte pack made off with a park sign warning tourists to stay away from an area with active grizzly bears. Biological science technician Taylor Rabe, who has spent 13 winters studying wolves as part of the Yellowstone Wolf Project, was monitoring the pack on Monday when she spotted one of the pups running across the road carrying a long, straight stick.

A closer look through her spotting scope revealed it was actually a bear management warning sign. The pup carried and chewed on it for a while before abandoning it and rejoining the adult pack. Rabe said the behavior is typical of pups who have wandered from the adults and are entertaining themselves, often drawn to things that smell interesting or are simply fun to carry. Good news for the wolf family; no charges have been filed for the theft. The Junction Butte pack entered the 2025-2026 winter season with 15 wolves and is one of the most-watched packs in the park.
