Chinese Students Renting AI Smart Glasses To Cheat On Tests

A growing number of university students in China are renting AI-powered smart glasses to cheat on exams, and the technology is proving surprisingly effective. The glasses, which look nearly identical to ordinary eyewear from brands like Xiaomi and Alibaba, are equipped with cameras, audio, and large language models that can scan exam questions and quietly display answers in augmented reality on the lens. Using a small remote disguised as a ring, students can feed questions to the AI without any visible movement.

Rentals run around $6 to $12 per day on secondhand platforms. A study by researchers at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology found that a student using AI glasses ranked in the top five out of 100 classmates, with an average score of 92.5 out of 100. The glasses are already banned from major national exams in China but are still being used in regular university tests. Purchasing the glasses outright costs $270 to over $1,000.
