A bar in Tokyo’s Shibuya district is making waves with a sign that warns older customers away. The sign says the izakaya-style bar is for the younger crowd, specifically those under 40. Japanese news outlet TV Asahi visited the bar and found the sign still up near the entrance, and during their visit, about 90-percent of customers were in their 20s.
A bar employee explained that younger patrons complained about noise when older customers were around. The owner wanted to create a space where young people could be loud without worrying about bothering others. However, the bar doesn’t actually ban people over 40. The owner says anyone who is “young at heart” is welcome. Staff will warn older customers that things might get noisy and let them in if they’re okay with that.
