Trap Set To Catch Bear Under California Man’s House Catches Another Bear Instead

The bear stories just keep coming. Earlier this month, a man in Altadena, California found out that a 550-pound black bear had been living under his home for more than two weeks and wouldn’t leave. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife set up a large metal trap on the property, sprayed with cherry and caramel scents to lure the bear out. The good news is that the trap worked.

But the bad news? They caught the wrong bear. A healthy 3- or 4-year-old male wandered into the trap instead of the squatter underneath the house. That bear was released the next day to a nearby habitat. The bear under the home, nicknamed Yellow 2120 because of the tag on his ear, has been in the Altadena area for about five months. Wildlife officials say this is common behavior for bears looking for a warm place to den during winter.
