The Biggest Christmas Gift Donor To Portland Children’s Hospital…Strippers

Sometimes, the people willing to give you the shirt off their backs aren’t wearing one. The biggest donor of toys to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland each year isn’t a school or a news station…it’s strippers. An annual event called Tatas for Toys has raised $183,000 worth of toys over the past 14 years. The event started at Dante’s nightclub in 2011 and raised just $500 that first year.

Last year alone, it brought in about $38,000, which organizers used to go on a massive shopping spree at a local toy store. This year’s show will be held Tuesday at the Alberta Rose Theatre, featuring 30 dancers from clubs across the city. The hospital’s Child Life Therapy Program serves about 10,000 children a year and uses the toys for comfort and to help explain medical procedures to young patients.
