A woman in China had her left ear torn off in a factory accident when her hair got caught in heavy machinery. Doctors could not put the ear back right away because the blood vessels were too damaged, so instead, they came up with a creative solution: they attached the ear to the bottom of her foot to keep it alive. The skin there is thin and has blood vessels similar in size to those in the ear.
Surgeons worked for 10 hours using needles and thread thinner than a human hair to connect the tiny blood vessels. For five months, the woman wore her ear on her foot, only wearing loose shoes and walking just enough to keep blood flowing. In October, doctors finally moved the ear back to its proper place after a difficult surgery to find healthy blood vessels on her scalp.
