Running a scheme in the world of collectible cards is a cut-throat world. GameStop now says it will ban Pokémon card scalpers for life if they’re caught using scales to weigh packs in stores. The company posted a warning on social media after a video showed someone weighing One Piece card packs to find valuable ones. Some Pokémon collectors believe packs with rare full-art cards weigh slightly more than regular packs, so scalpers use scales to pick out the best ones before buying them. However, this method isn’t foolproof and depends on the scale being used.
GameStop has been dealing with Pokémon scalping problems for a while and has already put other limits in place, like ending preorders and setting purchase limits for each product. Some fans praised the ban as a way to protect regular buyers, but others questioned whether GameStop workers would actually enforce it. Critics also pointed out that GameStop itself sells some Pokémon packs above the recommended retail price, so the store is benefiting from the whole situation.
