Man Almost Loses His Arm After Thief Bites His Hand

A 60-year-old shop owner in Istanbul, Turkey, nearly lost his arm after being bitten by a robber during a struggle in his store. Two masked men tried to rob his shop in early 2024, and when the owner fought back and grabbed one of the thieves, the criminal bit his hand hard to escape. The shop owner initially went to a local clinic for treatment and was sent home, but soon developed a fever and tremors as the bite wound became seriously infected. The infection spread up his arm over two weeks, causing it to swell to double its normal size and change color.

Doctors at Sultan Abdulhamid Han Training and Research Hospital tried everything but couldn’t stop the infection from climbing toward his shoulder. Facing possible amputation, they decided to try hyperbaric oxygen therapy as a last resort. The treatment worked, and within a week the patient showed significant improvement. After cleaning the wound and removing dead tissue, doctors saved his arm, and after three months of physical therapy, he regained full function.
