You’re minding your own business, and suddenly…bee attack. A quiet Sunday in the central French town of Aurillac turned chaotic when a swarm of bees raged through downtown for roughly 30 minutes. Twenty-four people were stung, and three, including a 78-year-old who went into cardiac arrest, were listed as critical before stabilizing. Firefighters, paramedics, and police rushed in, setting up a safety cordon while treating victims right on the street.
Officials say Asian hornets likely disturbed a long-established hive on a hotel roof, triggering the mass attack. The hive has since been removed and placed far outside town. Local fire chief Lt. Col. Michel Cayla called the scale of injuries “unprecedented” for the area, and Mayor Pierre Mathonier urged residents to stay alert until experts confirm no other agitated colonies remain nearby.
