oday’s thing that no one thinks about actually existing may be on the way out in New York. A state senator has introduced a bill to ban octopus farming before it starts in the state. Sen. Monica R. Martinez, along with Assembly member Tony Simone, wants to stop aquaculture that raises octopuses for food. They say octopuses are smart animals that can feel pain, and farming them could hurt the environment by polluting the ocean.
The bill is still early in the process and needs to pass the Environmental Conservation Committee before it can go to a vote in the Senate and Assembly. If it passes, New York would join California and Washington in banning this practice. Supporters, including animal welfare groups, hope it will prevent cruel farming methods and protect marine life.
