Little Lizard Loves Pineapple Juice New Jersey Town Closes Road For Salamander Migration Every Year

Why did the salamander cross the road? In New Jersey, it’s to hold up traffic. In late winter every year, salamanders cross from one side of Beekman Road in East Brunswick to the other. They make the trip to lay their eggs at their breeding pond and then make another trip back across the road to return home.

Around 25 years ago, someone noticed that the salamanders were getting squished by cars as they crossed, and the mayor of the town agreed to close the road for anywhere from four to ten nights in March and April. Are locals upset about the road closure? Nope, it’s turned into a yearly attraction, with around 250 to 300 people out on the road most nights spotting salamanders.
