Using local anesthesia, the surgery that normally takes around 15 minutes took Chen about an hour to perform on himself, but he succeeded. He also put himself in the running for “Understatement of the Year” when he said, “It was a strange feeling to touch and suture my own urethra.” Taipei’s Department of Health conducted a preliminary investigation and confirmed there were no legal issues with Dr. Chen giving himself a vasectomy.
