New York City’s insatiable appetite for pizza has led to a unique recycling solution in Central Park – a specialized bin designed solely for discarded pizza boxes. Unveiled ahead of the summer season in a bustling area near the Great Lawn, this pilot program aims to tackle the city’s notorious rat problem by providing a dedicated receptacle for the giant containers that often clog traditional circular bins, creating an enticing food source for rodents.
On busy days, the Central Park Conservancy can remove over 100 boxes from this area alone, and if successful, more pizza box recycling bins could pop up across the park, helping to aid the city’s broader “war on rats”.
