With its trial over, a new probiotic being marketed under the name Nella is getting attention from a lot of people, but it’s not just the usual blend of vitamins you would expect. Dr. Jonathan Scheiman believes the key to good health is in the stomach, so his new product contains bacteria harvested from the poop of high-performing athletes.
He’s not joking. He says elite athletes all have a special bacterium in their poop that eats lactic acid, the molecule that causes soreness in muscles after exercise, and says introducing the same bacterium into your gut can up your performance. He’s getting rave reviews from some users but not everyone’s convinced. The company’s looking for regulatory approval for similar supplements.
