Springfield continues to diversify its population. Yesterday’s episode of The Simpsons, “The Sound of Bleeding Gums,” featured the show’s first-ever deaf voice actor, John Autry II. Autry plays Monk, the long-lost son of Lisa Simpson’s favorite jazz musician “Bleeding Gums” Murphy.
The impact most obvious to viewers was the fact that entire sequences of the episode featured American Sign Language; Autry called the guest appearance as “incredible” and “life-changing.” The ep aired just weeks after Sian Heder’s CODA made history when it became the first movie with deaf actors to win the Best Picture Oscar.
